CBR 61: Lager Lager Lager Ale

This week we taste a nice flight of subtle lagers (and an ale) to examine the nuances of each style. It's a quick show this week from the Thanksgiving holiday and business travel.

Show Pacing

Is it just me, or did anyone else like the pacing of this week's show? It didn't sound "e-mailed in" at all to me.

Pace

I also really liked the pace of the show. To me it sounded more energetic than usual.

and Old Protero 19th Century Straight Rye Whiskey are really delicious hard liquors that (sort of) promote craft beer.

Short Show vs. No Show

Me like show.

Seriously, way better than no show at all. I get so used to a show every week. Good job!

Bob's 47 is not a Dunkel

Strangely enough, I recently received both the Schlafly Oktoberfest and Bob's 47 in a BIF.

Our views on the two beers differed significantly (I wasn't crazy about the Schlafly as I found it a bit grainy - a problem I often have with domestic craft brewed Oktoberfests) but that is OK and what makes beer interesting.

The point I want to make is that calling Bob's 47 a dunkel is misleading and if you check BA or RB neither one of them place it in that category. BA is clearly wrong as it is not a Helles Lager. RB calls it a Premium Lager, whatever that is.

What I really liked about Bob's 47 was that it carried elements of several German lager styles - Vienna Lager, Oktoberfest and Munich Dunkel. From that perspective, I think it makes the point that you did in the show - if you look carefully, there are subtleties in some lagers that can make them interesting and enjoyable. I'm not much of a lager drinker but I would order Bob's 47 again and there are not many lagers I would make that comment about.

I was tormented about

I was tormented about categorizing the beer on the show. Such a nebulous beer combined with the low amount of preperation we did for the beers on the show made categorizing that beer tough. It was certianly too dark and toasty to be a Helles, and I thought it was light for a dunkel, but I have not had very many dunkels so I don't know the style very well. I do agree with you assessment that there are attributes from several German styles.

Daybreak and other things

I finally managed to listen to the show. Even though it's a short one, I've had a hectic week with not a lot of time for podcasts. That said, I've started walking to work (about 5km) and home again on Fridays, so that's about 50 minutes each way of pure listening time. :)

Anyway, a few comments. Firstly, Greg and Jeff - you'll be very happy to read this: http://www.fangasm.com/01television/is-the-sun-going-down-on-day-break.php

Secondly, I thought the pacing of the show was excellent. I'm apparently in the minority that enjoys it more when you are off topic than on topic, but I still found it a well paced show. As always, it made me want a beer (at 7am). That said, I'd hate to see the show be this short on a regular basis, but it's good to see that when you're tight for time, and "winging it" you can still pull off a great show.

Thirdly, the thing you forgot in the post show was discussions of spirits. I was really interested in where you were going with that, after the comments in the main show. I'm a huge fan of single malt scotch whisky. I suspect Greg's comments on Tequila were going to lead to an interesting discussion, and it's one I'd love to hear on a postshow soon. :)

Finally... and probably controversially... Survivor? REALLY? I've never watched an entire episode, but it's tricky to avoid, so I feel I have seen enough. I kindof get the sociology angle, but it just seems so tacky and fake. I can't believe any reactions are real, and I honestly suspect a ton of what is shown is scripted. My main reason for being so opposed is that I (rightly or wrongly) blame Survivor for kicking off the whole reality TV plague. It's led to lazy writers, lazy TV networks, and possibly the further dumbing down of an already not too smart audience. There was a great episode of "Duckman" (did you guys ever see that?) where they showed a parody TV network's hi-tech sampling/audience feedback system. It was a bunch of yes/no buttons in a bunch of trailer parks. I can't help but feel that this is the reality TV audience, so I was quite shocked to hear two smart guys like yourselves watch that. I've picked up some great TV recommendations based on you both - Heroes being the latest (we don't get it here, but my DSL line has been busy...) but I don't think I'll be watching Survivor any time soon. Hrm, you guys might like to try Torchwood. It seems to polarise people.

Rant over.

Greig out. :)
