It's the season for saison. Ha! After the great saison last week we decided to dive into the style head first with several American saisons. These run the gamut, both in flavor, and in alcohol - one is 4.5% while another is over 9% ABV.
I know everyone's talked ad nauseum about this, but I do get some value out of BA reviews. I do take most of the reviews with a grain of salt because the high scores seem to be reserved for high-alcohol and/or high-hopped beers. I read what people actually say about the beers beyond the numbered score. Mostly because, what someone may not like about the beer, I might like or vice versa.
I also use your show, of course, when making my decision about what to get when I'm at the store. There have been times when I'm listening to the show in the car and I will be by the liquor store where I buy almost all my beer and will pull in when something you've talked about piques my interest. Most of what you review, we aren't able to get in Georgia, but when I do find something, I usually buy it. BA is also good for finding other beers of the same style because they will have a list next to a review and that helps when I can't find the beer y'all talk about, but will still give me an idea.
So, it's not perfect. The people on there all seem to be hop heads. I still find it useful. Discuss.
I agree. Beer Advocate is where I post my own reviews - I find the reviews on there much more nuanced than RateBeer, for instance.
I also don't consider 87 a bad score; I'd try a beer that got an 87. One of my favorite beers, Duchesse de Bourgogne, has an 88 on there. I read the details of the reviews rather than just going by the number. I sort by highest, then by lowest, and look for what flavors stand out. If someone doesn't like a sour beer because it's sour, or a saison because it's funky, I know not to take them seriously on that beer.

Craft Beer Radio is an Internet talk show about craft and micro brewed beers. The mission of the show is to spread the word of good beer. We introduce people to craft beer, and teach them about different beer styles, brewers who make them, and beer history. Whether you are new to craft beer or have been drinking it for more than 20 years we have something for you.
