CBR 87: New Belgium

This show we have our first tele-tasting. Julia Herz from the Brewers Association sits in on the show all the way from Denver. Since Julia is from the Denver area we decided that it was time to try some of the New Belgium beers that we had in the fridge. An Interview and a normal show wrapped up into one, will wonders never cease?

New Belgium light

Very nice show and Julia's well-qualified contributions were very much appreciated. Interesting to hear such a nicely constructed and articulated response from inside the BA as to the "craft" definition.

Re: Julia's Maui Brewing suggestion, I think she's spot on. Had the opportunity to try their Bikini Blond on a Hawaiian Airlines flight and found it to be amazingly good. I sincerely hope they are able to find mainland distribution soon! Time to blow that other "Hawaii" brewery off the charts (Kona Brewing incidentally). Not only are the beers crap but contract brewing = bogus. That and at this point isn't it virtually an A-B DBA?

As for the New Belgium beers, you tried a sample of their lighter selections which are not half bad (although, the Springboard just ain't for me). What you're really missing is their sour and smaller lines (Eric's and Lips of Faith). Without exception, every one I've tried is absolutely amazing. From the Le Terroir on down. I pray that those of us lucky enough to be in their sphere of distribution will find 'em bottled sometime 'cause a steady supply could be life-altering.

Wonderful Interview

Guys, that was a fantastic interview! I appreciate your abilities to just let her talk - its harder to do than many people know, but you did a great job. She was informative, passionate, seemingly contagious in her enthusiasm. I'm happy she's on our side, and knowing that the BA is as active as they are in all the behind the scenes stuff. Also appreciated that, while she was 'working', she didn't appear to be selling anything or forcing opinions. It was all natural, letting her enthusiasm speak as much as her knowledge.

I also enjoyed your concentrated efforts to describe the beers. It may be just me, but it seemed you put a bit more into that than some other shows, and you did it well - you weren't faking it, I don't want you to misunderstand the "extra effort" comment.

Thanks guys, this was a great show to listen to. Hope you enjoyed your trip.

This woman has a palate!

Not only is Julia a great personality who has a lot of interesting information to share, she has a terrific palate as well.

This was the best show ever. Try to convince her to make regular guest appearances.
