I thought it was kind of cool that you left your rankings off the previous two (or so) show note listings. It added a little suspense as I tried to figure out how you both would rank based on your comments during the course of the show. It's like those naked Britney Spears pictures on the internet. If you know they're there, it's really hard not to look...
Description:
A Düsseldorf specialty, an Altbier is a German style brown ale, the “alt” literally translates to "old" in German, and traditionally Altbiers are conditioned for a longer than normal periods of time. Other sources note that "alt" is derived from the Latin word "altus," which means "high" and refers to the rising yeast. Take your pick, but the extended conditioning mellows out the ale's fruitiness and produces an exceptionally smooth and delicate brew. The color ranges from amber to dark brown, medium in carbonation with a great balance between malt and hops.
"Sticke" is a stronger version of an Altbier, thus a bit more malty and hoppy to boot.
Appearance: Cloudy amber mahogany brown color nice tan head dwindles slowly leaves behind even lacing, very nice. Aroma: Nice malty caramel presence touch of chocolate with a nutty edge topped off with some nice underlying vinous or raisiny tones. Taste: Fruity character with nutty highlights matched with mild cocoa bursts in each sip, a relatively flavorful altbier pretty damn creative and unfiltered to boot. Mouthfeel: Medium body nice carbonation not too heavy nice texture rolls smoothly. Drinkability: Incredibly smooth and quaffable enjoyed this one at Porter's in Erie.
As you can see the color has changed, since they changed ownership and new labels arrived so did some of the original recipes they used to brew. I drank this one back in July of 04 at Porter's which is now BrewErie at Union Station which was the original home of Erie Brewing when it was called Hopper's. It wasn't a porter esque brew when I sampled it way back when.
Jeff how did you rate Bell's above Pride and Joy it's such a train wreck of flavor, again that's my opinion.
The Three Floyds Pride and Joy, not Bells, was an overly bitter mild, much like The Bitter End from East End Brewing.
Thanks for explaining your review of the Altbier, I was curious because you were describing an Alt, and I was tasting a Porter.
