Flying Dog leaving Denver...

Flying Dog is moving all of their brewing and bottling to MD and my friends are losing their jobs. Ick. They are keeping their HQ here, I assume so they can keep saying that they are a Colorado brewer. Flying Dog - the macro-marketing-est microbrewery!

Yeah But they sure do make a good beer....

Im so sorry that anyone has to lose their jobs but they aren't just moving out of Colorado, they're moving from the mountains to the east coast. Now I forgot where I saw the article but I guess that recently someone forgot to pressure a tank during the sanitation cycle. The tank imploded. Well began imploding anyway. So rather than fix this mess.....The company decided to move to the part of the country where it turns out 70% of their beer was being made. And I heard the place was kind of a shit hole anyway. O well....worse things have happened. I just hope the beer stays the same. Double Dog and the whole wild dog series has been awesome!

Tank...

Yeah, was down there a few nights ago and saw the tank first hand. It was pretty wild - and expensive to replace, I assume. I just feel that their excuses are lame and it sucks to see a brewery leave Colorado and that I know people who are unable to relocate to MD and have to lose their jobs because of that fact.

We have a great beer culture here and I hope this doesn't indicate future trends. I doubt it will, as FD was a bit of an anomaly anyway - the culture inside the brewery is pretty weird I think. Blah, I am just going to stop drinking their beer.

Understandable....

I know your friends are losing thier jobs and that sucks! So it's understandable that you'll stop drinking thier beers but as I'm having some beef and Rice a Roni with a Double Dog (Jeff and Greg should add this to thier pairings list), I only wonder if you'll be missing out. I mean cause once in a while they do make a great beer like this one.

I'll say this, my dad owns a liquor store (in Massachusetts that's where we sell beer). I buy the beer for the store. Due to a horrible relationship with a distributor (mainly they suck at keeping things in stock and they are generally a bad company), we don't deal with them. Consequently, I can't get nor sell Dogfish Head or [Pizza] Port. Now I buy these at another store at full retail (not the worse thing in the world) but, I should be able to sell this and many other brands through our store. It's kind of the same thing. So I understand. I hope your friends get new jobs at like Oskar Blues or Left Hand or some other cool brewery.

Hey want to trade some beers? I've been hearing a lot about Breckenridge Beers as of late.

Flying Dog Brewery to concentrate operations at state-of-the-art brewery in Maryland

FLYING DOG BREWERY TO CONCENTRATE OPERATIONS AT

STATE-OF-THE-ART BREWERY IN MARYLAND

Colorado Craft Beer Company Enjoys Record Setting Year;

Will Focus Brewery Operations In Maryland to Improve Production Efficiency

DENVER (December 11, 2007) – Eric Warner, president and CEO of Denver-based Flying Dog Brewery, announced today that the company is concentrating its brewing operations at a state-of-the-art facility in Maryland where Flying Dog has had its beers brewed since 2006. Warner also announced that the company recently raised $3 million in capital to fund continued development of its brands.

Flying Dog Brewery, which has been in operation since 2000, will produce its last beer in January 2008. The company will maintain its corporate headquarters at 2401 Blake St. in Lower Downtown Denver, and Flying Dog's 13 craft beers will continue to be distributed throughout Colorado.

Increased costs of raw materials, including hops and malt, combined with the loss of contracts from smaller craft brewers were a significant factor in the decision, according to Warner. "By concentrating the brewing operations in Maryland, we will become a more efficient business, which is very important given the extremely competitive conditions in the craft beer industry," he said. "This is a smart, proactive business move for our growing company and the most efficient use of our capital.

"Aside from the concentration of production, we're proud to say that our customers won't notice a difference," Warner continued. "We are committed to providing our customers in Colorado and throughout the country with the highest-quality craft beers that they've come to know and love."

The Maryland facility, where 70 percent of Flying Dog's beers are already being brewed, has several state-of-the-art features that allow for higher-quality and more efficient brewing, including a modern bottling line that produces 250 bottles per minute, compared to 140 bottles per minute at the Denver facility, and has lower oxygen pick-up at filling, leading to longer shelf life, and flavor stability. Additionally, the Maryland facility features improved brewhouse equipment and a more spacious warehouse and cooler.

"The building our Denver brewery is in is old and needs a minimum of $1 million in infrastructure improvements to keep up with our increasing production levels and product quality standards," Warner said. "This year alone, we saw a 20 percent unit growth – our strongest yet. Concentrating our operations at the Maryland facility will allow us to the meet the growing demand by surpassing current production levels."

There will be no layoffs on Flying Dog's production team as Flying Dog Brewery's Denver production team will all be offered jobs at the Maryland brewery including relocation packages and a scouting trip in January.

"We're proud of our Denver production team and are thrilled at the opportunity to have them on our team in Maryland," continued Warner. "We're working very hard to ensure this happens."

That line

...there will be no layoffs was only true to a point.

Well,

I'm sorry for your friends, but I'm happy that they have grown big enough to export their beer to Denmark!
Gonzo and Snake Dog makes me happy no matter how macro they appear.
