From your comments in the post show, Jeff & Greg, you are out of touch with football hooliganism in the UK. About as out of touch as people in the UK are about US crime anyway!
Since all-seater stadiums were introduced over a decade ago, hooligans can be traced from CCTV and their seat number. It doesn't mean that fighting doesn't go on, but it now happens away from stadiums at pre-arranged meets between certain fans wearing team colours.
I've walked through Southampton & Portsmouth with my Wolves shirt on on route to a match and only traded jockular banter with opposing fans.
That said I wouldn't go into either Portsmouth or Southampton city centres if they were playing each other and I certainly wouldn't wear my Wolves shirt in Wolverhampton if our local rivals West Bromwich were playing us.

I was thinking of that article when I was writing "About as out of touch as people in the UK are about US crime anyway" - I listened to the podcast version in my car a short while ago.
I guess there are bits of each others cultures we're glad we don't have & glad we do.
