This weekend is the Eurovision Song Contest - for those who live outside the European Broadcasting Union, it is a cheesy, fairly camp song contest shown every year on telly across Europe and Israel.
To celebrate I've bought beers from all over Europe (from beersofeurope.com) and will be drinking them with some friends whilst the song contest is being aired. We might even have the telly on!
Unfortunately Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Switzerland & Ireland didn't make it to the finals, but I've got beers representing them for my competition. I don't have beers for Albania, Estonia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, but we aren't too concerned about this.
I've had to take some liberties too; Bavaria is now a country for the purposes of the drinking contest. England & Scotland have entered beers separately rather than being the UK. This was to raise the quality of the beer selection as many countries have generic fizzy corn lager.
I'll let you know how it goes by writing an article after the event. A full list of beers are at www.dmonbeer.co.uk
Estonia!
Try Harvey's imperial stout - it's brewed under licence from an Estonian brewery.

We have to make it through the entire evening. We won't do this if we have too many beers like Harvey's imperial stout! Its a good beer but just a bit too intense for me. Mind you I do like a drop of Darkstar Espresso Stout.
Anybody else celebrating?

Winning Eurobeers
There were many generic Euro fizzy lagers and not too many suprises. The Ukraine's Etalon Weissbier came 1st - not the best German-style wheat beer in the world but still a great drink. Germany's Hovels Bitterbier came 2nd - its like the German's tried to make an English bitter in the traditional lager style. In equal 3rd place came the UK's O'Hanlon's Yellow Hammer - a smooth, mellow beer that was quite vanilla-like and Bavaria's Rothaus Tannen Zapfle a traditional lager with good bitterness and some pine resin flavour.
The other two drinkers didn't like the sour Cantillon Grand Cru Bruocsella so this dragged the average score down and it didn't even make the top ten! Rock bottom was Superbock Green from Portugal which was a lemon flavoured lager which tasted like washing up liquid squirted into the top of a Fosters lager.
They really rattled through the songs on the telly, we had to record it on a Skybox and keep pausing it whilst we caught up on the beers. It took us 'til 2am to finish. Russia won the song contest in case anyone was interested.
