A few weeks ago Jeff was in Durham Northa Carolina and had dinner and beers with Daniel Bradford from All About Beer Magazine at Tylers Taproom. We chat about many things beer.
Near the end of this interview with Daniel Bradford, he talks about wanting to learn how to describe beer flavors, and expand his taste descriptor vocabulary.
Jeff tells him (semi-joking but also think there is a lot of truth in it) that he "should listen to craft beer radio!".
His response is that "Yeah, but you guys are full of sh!t.". He also seems to be semi-joking but also a little serious. Later he makes another little dig implying writers are better than podcasters because "writers actually think about what they are doing."
Jeff, how did you take these comments? You seemed to chuckle and maybe were a bit uncomfortable? Just curious.
He may've been joking and just has a "cutting" sense of humour, but not knowing the guy, it came across as a little insulting and condensending to me. Has he even listened to your show? I think you handle your show in a relatively professional way, have reviewed a vast variety\styles of beers, and are BJCP certified so I think he actually COULD learn something from listening to your show.
And I also think that podcasting as a medium isn't any less valuable than magazine print. It's all what you make of it, and both are just different. Seemed a bit rude for him to put down what you do.
Maybe I'm just interpreting his comments wrong, but just wondered your take.
I think it's Daniels sense of humor. I wasn't offended by it. There is a hint of truth that a beer writer like Jay Brooks, or Lew Bryson are on a different level than podcasters. I don't mean to say that no beer podcast will ever strike it big and be able to quit their day job. But until one does, or until we do. we aren't on the same level.
If it sounded like he was insulting me more than I was insulting him. that is only because I'm not as quick. I insulted him plenty when we were off the air. Maybe I felt awkward ripping on him on my show so I kept it to a minimum.
Fair enough. Thanks for following up. Glad you weren't offended and were professional enough to plow through and do a decent interview.
On your comment about "beer writer’s vs pod-casters"...
Yes Lew Bryson and Jay Brooks are on a different level than CBR in the fact that they are getting paid to talk beer. But as for content, in my opinion, your guys are on the same level. And really, I would put you above Lew Bryson. I was unfortunate enough to buy his "Joe Sixpack's Philly Beer Guide", and found it mostly filler. I'd take a couple episodes of CBR over his book any day.
Also someone could make an argument by throwing out Rick Seller's name as a pod-caster who might be considered someone who has been able to "strike it big" (relatively speaking) by becoming editor for Draft Magazine. The "levels" are really not that far off.
Yeah, when listening to that here, it did feel a little like Jeff was taking the brunt of some almost personal digs, but it was also clear both parties had been drinking and that Jeff had got some zingers in off-air. It reminded me of an interview we'd have over here. Laid back, informal, and with a fair amount of good-natured, but often cutting sounding jokes.
I enjoyed the interview style a lot. Jeff - you've certainly stepped up your game lately and aren't afraid of expressing your opinion or stating a controversial view. Also, I enjoyed the "two dudes just shooting sh!t in a bar" style.
Nice work.

Doling out the harshness
